What happened to TreeDBNotes?

TreeDBNotes was a personal information manager for Windows and an outliner. It was distributed in a free edition and a paid Pro edition, which added contacts, passwords, tasks, reminders, and an e-book builder.

The program stored information in tree-structured .treedb databases and appealed to users who wanted rich text notes, local storage, portability, and a single-file way to organize large amounts of information.

History

TreeDBNotes was published under the SoftViewer, SoftArtStudio, and MyTreeDB names. It was available in two main editions: TreeDBNotes Free and TreeDBNotes Pro. The Free edition focused on note management, while Pro added contacts, passwords, tasks, reminders, and other organizer features.

It was actively developed from approximately 2007 until 2015.

The last release of TreeDBNotes Free was version 4.34.1 in November 2014. The last TreeDBNotes Pro release was version 4.50 build 05 on September 15, 2015. The developer's final public statement was a July 28, 2015 Facebook post about testing Windows 10 compatibility.

No formal discontinuation announcement was made. Development simply stopped, and the official TreeDBNotes websites later went offline.

Compatibility & Availability

TreeDBNotes installers can still be found on third-party download sites. You can still download the free version of TreeDBNotes from PortableFreeware.com, and existing installations continue to run for many users on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

However, the official website is no longer available and the Pro registration system is offline. That means people who download the Pro trial today cannot obtain a new license key from the original developer.

The current .treedb database format is proprietary and has no public specification. Older TreeDBNotes databases may use the .tdn extension. Either way, users still relying on TreeDBNotes have a practical reason to export their data while the program still works on their computers.

TreeDBNotes Alternative

If you are looking for a modern replacement for TreeDBNotes, you may take a look at MyInfo. It is an actively developed TreeDBNotes alternative for Windows that supports importing TreeDBNotes notes through an export-and-import workflow.

You can export a TreeDBNotes subtree to files and then import the resulting folder into MyInfo, preserving the tree structure and note content while moving your information into a maintained application.
